History of Mountains and Rivers

Mountains and Rivers Folk and Decorative Painters inc.

In June 1999 a group of keen folk artists in the western area of Sydney, namely the Hills-Hawkesbury-Penrith-Blue Mountains areas formed an Association which they named the "Mountains and Rivers Folk and Decorative Painters inc." The group comprised folk and decorative artists who not only loved their art form, but felt that this part of Sydney was an area where there had only been very limited participation from other Associations.

The Association has gone from strength to strength and at present has about 100 members, not only from the immediate region but from all parts of Australia, and several from New Zealand. We are a non- profit organistation, involved in the Memory Box Programme, where our members paint Memory Boxes to be presented to parents who have lost a child at birth, in this particular instance, supporting Nepean, Katoomba, Dubbo, Mudgee and Norwest Hospitals. We also paint smaller boxes to contain th jewellery of patients who pass away in Emergency and Cancer Wards of Nepean, Dubbo, Mudgee, Camdon and Gulong Hospitals. We try where possible to assist any of our members facing, drought, flood or other adversity.

Since 2010 we have sponsored prizes in Folk Art categories
of various regional shows to further promote this art form.

We hold at least four painting days throughout the year and conduct a Convention each year, this year being in May and also another painting weekend if time permits in October and generally promote folk and decorative art. we have a guest artist at each of our meetings which are held quarterly at Penrith, and a Newsletter is sent to all members after each of these meetings.

We are now in our 14 th year since our formation.
